This is a super recipe! It's easy, rich, and liked by all. I'd recommend blanket your spatula in cooking spray to brand getting the kickoff layer spread into the pan since it'south a fleck sticky.

This is such a proficient recipe. I was wanting to submit this recipe to the site, but subsequently doing a quick search, found it was already hither. There are and so many variations yous tin brand too. You can use lemon flavored block mix to make it what my mom calls "lemon squares" or you can follow the recipe posted here and add approx. ii cups of chocolate chips to the top layer for a chocolately twist. Either way is great! Ane warning though, this isn't a "normal" block. If y'all insert a toothpick to ensure it's thoroughly cooked, it won't come out clean. Await for the top to brownish equally this is a very gooey.

This cake was fabulous!! If y'all're looking for a beautiful LOOKING block, this isn't information technology. If you're looking for an easy cake with a delightfully unique taste, this is the 1. The bottom layer has the consistency of a moist cake whereas the top layer has more than a pudding-like texture...this is how a chess block (and pie) is supposed to exist. It is absolutely a delicious cake that I will be proud to serve to my inlaws tomorrow. Oh, and I used fat free foam cheese and low fat butter (just added an actress tablespoon of butter in each layer which puts back the liquid that low-fat butter is missing). I also added 3/4 cup of crushed pecans to the top of the bottom layer. I feel that added JUST what the recipe needed to be perfect! Past the style, rut it up for a few seconds in the microwave and serve with ice foam. Wonderful! Enjoy! Ally

this is awesome, I have been making it for years, however the recipe I've used only has butter in the base, not the top (in other words, the top is 8 oz foam cheese, 1 lb confectioners sugar, one egg (since no butter) and 1 t vanilla). It also has three/4 c nuts mixed in to the bottom layer. I love this stuff, it's addictive!

My mom and I accept been making this for years. The simply difference is we just use ane egg and a stick of butter with the cake mix and no butter in the foam cheese mixture, and then bake at 350 for 35 minutes. Helpful hints ~ if dough is too thick add 1 teaspoon of h2o and when pressing the dough into your pan, spray your hands with something like Pam.

This is a nifty cake recommend that yous employ the CLASSIC xanthous block mix instead of the BUTTER RECIPE block mix because it makes the bottom crust turn out improve.

I am a caterer, and this recipe is not but highly-seasoned to chess pie lovers, but also to those who don't similar the farthermost sweetness of Chess Pie. Also you don't have to worry about the crust falling off when you cut it! It is a huge hit, and often requested by clients.

This recipe turned out perfect! My hubby and I fabricated these "Chess Squares" together. Nosotros did however decide to cook at 350 for approx 45 minutes (instead of 325 for an hour). Made as is this is a two star recipe. No not pretty but tasted OK - it is sweet and a bit eggy. I call up I might like recipes that call for just one or two eggs a bit better. I call back an addition of a splash of vanilla wouldn't hurt for the topping. Practiced advice to spray your easily with vegetable spray or your spatula to go the base of operations in easily. I can see how you could add things to the base of operations like nuts or kokosnoot and play around with the topping - call back lemon zest with a lemon cake base of operations. I likewise recall the bake time is a bit long - I should have pulled mine later virtually 45 minutes and I know my oven temp is right since I moniter it with an oven thermometer. Got a flake chocolate-brown esp. around the edges.

This is a great treat and a permanent item on the card for the guests - which means I make it at least every x days :) However - I wished at that place would be a rating with "5 stars after piffling alteration". I had to cut one star off because 4 cups of powdered sugar are style too much. I apply only 1 ane/2 cups simply at that place are withal guests that recall the cake is too sweet. I, on the other paw, have a sweet molar (I can eat sugar cubes similar a horse ;) ) and think it is just perfect with the reduced sugar. And - be enlightened: i hour baking time will fire the cake. Better cheque after 35 to xl minutes if acme is already browned.

After reading all of the reviews about sweetness; I used a cake mix with ane/iii less saccharide "Archetype Yellow." I likewise decreased the iv c. confectioner'southward sugar to 3 cups. I too used one/3 less fatty cream cheese. I was too trifling to become downstairs to our other refrigerator to get more eggs and simply used i egg in the meridian layer with a tablespoon of oil (and it didn't even actually need that). The dessert came out wonderfully !! I will agree with other reviewers that it is very rich and the baker has to watch the cake for browning and pulling from edges to ensure block is done (toothpick method will not work). This is so rich and so yummy and very easy to make. A lot of people were complaining that this was too 'messy' and they couldn't cut the cake. I didn't have this trouble. The only thing I did differently was: I cut almost 3/four cup powdered sugar (and it was still very sweetness), I added ane tsp. vanilla to cream cheese mix for personal preferance, and I merely broiled for 50 min, rather than lx. I let cool for about an hour before cutting and it came out perfect. Thank you for the awesome recipe!! Volition make once more for certain and experiment. I was looking for this, just didn't know what information technology was chosen. A friend calls information technology Ugly Cake. We add ane/2 cup of chopped pecans to the cake mix. It makes it actress special. Meridian layer, we practice not add together butter and only 1 egg. It is broiled at 350 not 325. Best baked in a glass dish sprayed with Pam. Completely cool earlier cutting. Dynamite!

I did not care for this block - manner too rich for me and our guests did not go nuts over it. Nigh couldn't cease the small slice I had served them. Maybe we were just way as well full for this but I don't care how full I am - if the dessert rocks I can ordinarily end information technology. a very skilful cake, absolutely piece of cake and no fuss at all. I used only one egg in the top layer, because I had only three in the fridge, only it was ok; and less sugar than stated, and it was so sweet all the same.

Very rich well-nigh cheesecake topping, I didn't have four cups of powdered sugar and then used 31/2 cups probably could have used less and it still would accept been sweet enough. I topped with chopped pecans before baking. Thank y'all for sharing this recipe.

This was a wonderful cake, piece of cake to make. I used 12 cup less saccharide every bit suggested, depression fat foam cheese, and a generic make white block mix instead of yellow. Information technology turned out great. I did take it out of oven 5 mins before than recipe said, equally it was getting pretty brown and had pulled abroad from the sides. I similar the idea of a cake with no frosting for a change. We had it with coffee and conversation! Perfect! I would make once more.

This cake was skilful, but very very sweet! If you practice not similar supersweet, I would pass on this. But the season was lovely and it made a toffee-like crust that was like candy. Went over well at work.

I followed the recipe exactly. Information technology was very practiced. The top did not go gold brown until a full hour had passed but the block at the bottom was browned instead of lite colored as in the picture. It was non gooey like I expected. It was much firmer than I thought it would be after reading reviews. I remember I should have moved my oven rack up a little flake and cooked it a fiddling less time. Regardless, I will definitely be making it once more and I'll be taking information technology to work tomorrow to share with colleagues. I'1000 sure I'll get a thumbs up. My husband actually liked it! Thanks!

I fabricated this block tonite, as directed except baked information technology @ 340 degrees for 40 minutes... due to oven variation. It was browned on top cooked thruout and admittedly succulent. For those concerned almost sweet, cutting back on powdered sugar. I think the recipe is fine as it is !! happy baking !!!

This is 1 of my married man's favorites growing up and i was eager to give it a attempt. The recipe is quite good. I have learned through trial and mistake that it is all-time made in a jelly roll pan and cut into cookie sized pieces due to the richness of it. I decrease the baking time to almost 40 minutes.

This is a wonderful cake! To go far a prettier cake you can put pecan halves on summit. I sometimes cut this in small squares and place a pecan half on each piece and identify on a platter. It makes a much more bonny dessert this way. You actually tin't crush the gustation!

The recipe was easy to make, but information technology turned out merely a flake as well greasy for me. I halved the amount of sugar added though, so perchance I should have halved the butter as well for the topping. But... I'one thousand not sure I'll make this once more. The bottom of the cake was too a bit coarse/hard in my opinion, and I would have rather had a softer block on the bottom.

Based on other reviewers, I decreased confectioners saccharide to iii cups. This is a great dessert, and reminds me of a local Philadelphia favorite called "butter block", but this isn't as runny and gooey. Excellent recipe!

My son made this for a few friends and apparently it was a hit. We only got to split a small-scale piece that was left. Everyone raved about how good information technology was. We will definitely be making this again. He followed the recipe all the way except for the confectioners saccharide. He used regular sugar and it still turned out good!!!

I merely brought this cake to a freind'south house for dinner. It was nifty - everyone loved it! I made it almost exactly as the recipe stated...the just affair I changed was that I liberally sprinkled the top with chopped pecans before blistering it. I chose it because I had everything I needed already in my pantry and refrigerator! Thanks!! Great recipe!!

This was my first experience with chess block. The consitency reminds me quite a bit of Lemon bars. They were delicious, and the recipe was very easy to follow although I agree with the reviewer that suggested using 1/ii C. less carbohydrate. Great with tea or coffee!

Honey this recipe! Made information technology for a friend for Thanksgiving and her family loved information technology! She made information technology for her son-in-police for his birthday instead of a traditional cake! This was soo good! At first, I had a slice correct out of the oven and i wasn't very addicted of information technology, merely, next solar day after I warmed a refrigerated piece, information technology was phenomenal. So rich and I love the toffee like chaff on pinnacle and custard like center. The merely thing I take to say is that information technology was done way before an hour, only took 45 min. I'yard no bakery, so I had no idea what chess cake was - based on the reviews, I gave information technology a go. I didn't consider, however, that this cake has no frosting; information technology's hardly a evidence stopper sitting in the 9x13 pan. This block was for a babe shower so, I 'frosted' the cake with absurd whip, busy it, and crossed my fingers. Although I recall it is far also rich in calories (when I consider how many hours I'd accept to conditioning to burn down them off!), people loved the flavour and texture! Some asked what bakery I picked it up at! Fooled them :) Neat cake, just lacks entreatment!

I just made this for the first time yesterday and received mixed reviews. I used a lemon cake mix b/c that's what I had. Otherwise I followed the recipe. The cake was done in a 60 minutes and held up well when cut just the gustatory modality was less than satisfactory. I won't exist making this dessert again. Sorry.

I dear this block and take been making it since I was a teenager. None of my friends or family unit ever heard of it before my mom got the recipe. Now information technology'southward a required dessert at every family gathering. The only differences are that I use one egg for the bottom and 3 for the top..too, no butter in the top. I'll accept to experiment with this version ane day.
